How does WhatsApp And Signal Messaging App earn?

So the most frequently asked and searched question throughout the Internet is that, how do these messaging applications earn in spite of being free on app stores and with no inside purchases?

1. WHATSAPP

So the time when WhatsApp was introduced to the people by Jan Koum and Brian Acton in early 2009, it was free to use but as it required maintenance the founders decided to charge 1$ per number registration on the application. FYI the founders didn’t choose to go for advertisements because they hated it and thought that this will ruin customer experience.

I know your next question is that after Facebook purchased WhatsApp they made the application completely free. So, How are they earning now? Let’s understand this point by point.

  • First of all WhatsApp has introduced payment methods in its application. So, they charge the respective banks through which the payment is being processed.
  • As we know that our chats on WhatsApp are encrypted end to end, but our relations (Family/ Friends) are not.
  • Which here means that they know what things you like and dislike. They even know what kind of emotional and mental state are you in.
  • So, in order to serve the customer best advertisement experience Facebook uses data collected based on photos and shares done by the client.
  • WhatsApp has now been able to recognize 60+ languages. So, they have a very good reach in terms of personal likes and dislikes.
  • Well Facebook has 100% target interested audience which has made its user interference more engaging. This helps business and customer to be connected by default and with this customer won’t have to reach for the products or services they are looking for.

2. Signal Messaging App

The Signal application was launched in early mid 2010 by Moxie Marlinespike and Brian Acton. From the start it stayed as a non- profit organization focusing upon user privacy and no intention of introducing advertisement to earn profit by any means. But however it needed money to run so it started by:-

  • Collecting donations as to make the application run.
  • It also got 50 million donation money from Brian Acton (one of the co-founders of WhatsApp).
  • Also, the program is open-sourced so developers can go in and offer patches and solutions, all without racking up a substantial bill (similar to Wikipedia or WordPress).
  • This application lacks business model as they are not looking to earn profit through it.
  • Their primary focus is to keep user privacy.

So which is better and which is bad?

Well the answer is simple and clear. Both the applications are free, but use different techniques to earn, one is structured business model focusing upon the customer friendly interface and another one doesn’t want any profit and wants total privacy.

  • WhatsApp focuses upon providing best messaging and product placing for its customers. Also, by providing easy payment methods and WhatsApp business it makes the platform ready for any kind of user (customers/ businessmen).
  • The signal has only one focus which is to provide complete privacy to its users and be a channel for exchanging services.
  • Therefore, both of these applications are best in their own ways. It is up to you which application you want to use for chatting.
